Big news today - Benazir Bhutto, the daughter of Pakistan and two time former Prime Minister was assassinated as she was leaving a rally in Rawalpindi, near the capital Islamabad today - only two months after she's returned from an exile of eight years. She survived another assassination attempt the day she returned to Pakistan.

Benazir Bhutto was the leader of opposition in Pakistan. The 54 years old was said to be fighter for democracy in Pakistan. Her assassination was an act of terrorism and one report already says that Al Qaida claimed this was their doing. The suicide bombing killed Benazir Bhutto and at least 20 other people. The reports say she was shot in the neck and chest and then the gunman blew himself up. The attacker managed to sneak himself in even though the rally was fortified with heavy security checking for all sorts of weapons and metals.

I have to admit I'm not familiar with Pakistan nor have I ever heard of Benazir Bhutto, but while most mainstream media picture her as a super awesome, charismatic politician, it seems like Pakistanis themselves are not sad about her assassination (aside from her direct supporters). It is said that Benazir Bhutto ruined the Pakistan in countless ways, even went as far as to murder her own brother to help advance her personal objectives. Pakis say Benazir Bhutto was responsible for endless looting of Pakistan.

More news coming soon...

This is the assassination video showing the assassin pulling a hand gun and firing three shots at Benazir Bhutto (you can hear the pistol fire three times) - according to reports, none of the shots fired actually hit Benazir Bhutto, but the attacker then set off the bomb he was carrying which killed Benazir Bhutto and at least 20 others. The blast took place rigth after the shots were fired and it's when the video footage gets all shakey and lost. This particular assassination video shows repeatedly the shots a gunman took at former prime minister, including slow motion and highlight of the area. The suspect is seen wearing a dark suite and the sunglasses

This is another video of Benazir Bhutto assassination offering the point of view from a different angle. You can hear three gunshots, but the gunman is not seen in that video. You can also see that her head scarf flaps up on her left side and Benazir Bhutto then slumps forward and slides into the car.

Benazir Bhutto's Biography:

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was a former prime minister of Pakistan and a father of Benazir Bhutto. He was hanged on April 4, 1979 after having bee convicted of conspiring to murder a political oponent.

Benazir Bhutto wanted to avenge the death of her father and aspired to become a prime minister herself - which was quite an aspiration considering Pakistan is an Islamic country dominated by men.

On April 10, 1986 Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan from exile to take charge of Pakistan People’s Party, the one her hanged father had founded. Her come back was accompanied by supporters who called her the daughter of Pakistan.

On May 5, 1986 Benazir Bhutto was already the leader of opposing Pakistan People’s Party and called for elections and threatened she would mobilize her supporters if the date was not set.

Pakistan People’s Party wins national election on November 17, 1988 and Benazir Bhutto becomes the first woman Prime Minister of Pakistan (Muslim nation) on December 3, 1988.

Pakistani president Ghulam Ishaq Khan dismissed Benazir Bhutto’s government accusing her of corruption 20 months after becoming the Prime Minister and the high court of Pakistan upholds the charges of president. Islamic Democratic Alliance takes charge of Pakistan in following election. Two years later, Benazir Bhutto snatches the Prime Minister seat again. She was again dismissed by the president because of corruption and incompetence. Benazir Bhutto’s husband Asif Ali Zardari flees Pakistan being widely accused of enriching himself with set up government contracts.

Both Benazir Bhutto and her husband are fined and sentenced to five years in jail for taking kick back on government contracts. Wile her husband goes to jail, Benazir Bhutto remains in exile in London. After eight years in exile, Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan having been granted amnesty by Pervez Musharraf. Her return was accompanied by a assassination attempt but the two blasts left her unhurt. Over hundred people were killed though.

Pakistan has nuclear weapons, makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside knowing a major unrest and chaos is underway in that country...

Wow, everywhere I look today, all I see is assassination of Benazir Bhutto. Like the whole world stands and fall on Pakistan. Why is it? I knew absolutely nothing about Pakistan before, why is their ex Prime Minister and her assassination so important to everyone around the world? Is it because Pakis have nuclear bombs? Does it mean that if any other insignificant country on Earth came to possession of nuclear weapons, we would all of a sudden deem that country important? What gives? I’ve never even remotely heard of Benazir Bhutto before. I’m confused!

Pakistan is a huge country, and very very important to the political climate in the middle east. Bhutto was one of the best chances for democracy in a country that has been ruled by a military dictatorship since she left.
It's entirely doubtful that Al Qaida would be the ones who assassinated her. It's much more likely it was the existing president, or even something organized by the US. Bhutto was a proponent of a strong and independant pakistan, she wasn't interested in kowtowing to US interests, and her return was also a huge threat to the current ruling party. Her party winning would have helped ensure a more stable Pakistan than has existed in many years. Now, her party is sure to collapse, and Pakistan will be stuck with the crappy current gov't for a few more years. Which means more instability and worry, which sucks in a country with nukes and terrrorists.
Her return from exile and declaration to run in the elections, knowing she was a target, was a very brave thing. It takes a huge set of cahones to brave almost certain death to do what you feel is right. I hope the citizens of Pakistan recognize and remember her sacrifice.

I know nothing about Pakistan nor have I ever heard of Benazir Bhutto, but now that I'm checking out the history, I totally knew her assassination was coming. How she didn't see it is a mystery to me... She was a marked woman, any way you look at it. There was no future for her as a Prime Minister of Pakistan. She should have understood it and stayed in exile.

Pakistan definitely counts among the most fucked up, corrupt, nations on the planet and as such it is a breeding ground for terrorists of all sorts. Musharraf is insane but so was Benazir Bhutto.

I seen news of her on and off after she was allowed back into Pakistan, and she sounded really good... I don't know much more on her background besides what you've posted know.

I really have to say though that this makes me sad. She could have been really good for Pakistan and I was looking forward to her actually doing something... but I seen this happening way before her actually doing something productive.

Nothing against her, everything against suicide bombers.

Doctors report - Benazir Bhutto died from severe head wound caused by a shrapnel. Surgeon Mussadiq Khan who treated her also said there were no bullet wounds anywhere on her body, contrary to initial reports that claimed Benazir Bhutto was shot in the neck and chest by the suicide bomber before explosion.

I hear the doctor’s report says that Benazir Bhutto was killed by hitting her head against the sunroof of a vehicle she was riding in. Possibly as results of the bomb blast, but allegedly the hand gun that fired at her missed her completely and the bomb shrapnel didn't kill her either. Quite lame assassination, but successful in the end so i guess that's all that counts. RIP Benazir Bhutto

I'm hesitant to believe any reports coming out of Pakistan, least of all, those detailing Bhutto's cause of death.

You are right, Tuesday. Pakistan was offered help with investigation of Benazir Bhutto assassination and death from foreign countries and Pakistani officials rejected all of it. That pretty much tells you all.

Canadian Foreign Affairs officials strongly advice against travelling to Pakistan. They are actually warning, not advising. There are four level of warnings that Canadian Foreign Affairs office releases in regards to dangerous regions of the world. They are:

1 - Exercise normal security precautions
2 - Exercise high degree of caution
3 - Avoid non-essential travel
4 - Avoid all travel

Warning #4 - avoid all travel applies to Pakistan. You can read more about it here.

then why did she slump forward and hit her head in the first place well before the blast?
