Computer Issue

Hah. It's always me with the computer issue, BUT This time it's my parents computer.

When browsing the internet or computer folders the browser jumps backwards when ever something is clicked.

Because my parents are dumb and think they are magically immune to computer viruses they never had an antivirus. I forced them to buy Norton, and somehow the idiot at Walmart sent my mom home with Utilities which was installed before anyone noticed and could have possibly returned it. So now both Utilities and Norton are installed, the computer is immaculately clean... except for what ever is causing this issue.

So it's in browsers (internet and folder) on Windows 7. Windows Defender, Norton Anti Virus and Power Eraser haven't found the issue. It doesn't occur in any programs, and it never went away with a system restore going back to about a month ago.

Paulie,

I'm not sure I fully understand what you mean - you click something, it goes backwards. You mean it takes a step back? Step back where?

BTW - there really is no need to buy an anti virus. Free version of AVG does offer full protection against viruses (paid version only offers some additional features you don't actually want), plus there is free software from Microsoft called Microsoft Security Essentials (free download from Microsoft.com website) which happens to be the best virus and malware protection there is.

I would suggest also installing IObit Advanced System Care - free version does all you need. It cleans up the system of clutter, especially the registry which is the most common source of problems. I don't know how well Norton Utilities performs these days, but I've had nothing but problems with it in the past. Not worth the money at all.

From what I've seen Utilities is only worth the money if you don't know anything about computers. Even I know how to manually do most of the things it does automatically. I'll try some of those programs tomorrow... but somethings telling me now that it's not a virus. I've tried Norton Anti Virus, Norton Power Eraser, Malwarebytes, and Windows Defender. You would think at least one of these would pick up on some sort of issue.

Btw, NEVER bother with Power Eraser. There's a reason it's free. It's because it stops working even though the Task Manager shows that it's still running fine after about 2-3 hours after the scan is done and it's just "processing data".

Sorry for the confusion.

If I open a folder on the computer or an internet browser and click to move to a new folder or website it'll load the new page, but then jump back to the one I just left.

For example:

1. I open IE Explorer to my Google.ca home page.
2. I type deviantArt.com into my address field and click go.
3. DeviantArt.com loads in my browser.
4. I click to enter a new part of deviantArt.
5. The browser brings me back to Google.ca instead of my new page on deviantArt.com

I've tested this on IE Explorer and Firefox 4, and as I said earlier, also in a regular folder browser window/box.

If it was redirecting to dubious websites, it could be a rootkit virus, but google? It makes no sense. There is even a virus which redirects you from links clicked on google result pages, but not to redirect you back to google.

Your best bet is to get Microsoft Security Essentials, restart the computer in safe mode (F8) and run a scan there.

What exactly happens with windows explorer? How does it redirect when you browse through folders? Does either internet browser redirect to google? Give more info cause it's not very clear.

Everything redirects to what ever I was looking at previously.

So for example, if I'm attempting to browse through my computer folders when I go to "My Documents" and click a folder it will load the contents of that folder, but before I can do anything it will bounce back to the "My Documents" folder.

It doesn't matter what page I'm looking at, what folder I'm looking at, it will ALWAYS bounce back to the previous page that I was looking at.

Same goes for online. It doesn't have to direct me to google. Just what ever page I was on previously.

Like, if I was on AlbertaStars and decided to go to Livejournal, it would redirect me back to AlbertaStars after Livejournal loads.

-_-

So $100 and about 14 hours of my time later... we found the problem... and it's so effing stupid I don't want to post what it was.

The cordless mouse batteries were dying.

Oh well, Norton is better than nothing on my parents computer. Sad thing is is that it doesn't matter anyways. As if perfectly planned my mom fell for the Ammyy.com phone scam today.

Excuse me while I beat something until it's no longer recognizable.
