Cryptozoology - Researching Loch Ness Monster and Yeti

Cryptozoology is the research and study of unknown animals. It often involves research of such mystical creatures as the Loch Ness Monster or Yeti. I have always wondered - where the heck do they get the funding for their research from? Who pays for people researching BigFoot in the middle of mountains? How are these people able to make a case on their research that they get approved for funding? I mean, how crazy do you have to be to give financial support to a project that's focused on cryptozoology.

Of course there is more to cryptozoology than just Yeti or Loch Ness Monster. Cryptozoologists also study extinct animal species (at least I hope they do). But the main part is the research of mythological creatures that only exist in myths and legends. I can't wrap my head around it. Who funds the research on mythical animals? Where does cryptozoology research get their funding from? Anybody knows?

What about you? Do you believe in cryptozoology? Do you believe Yeti or Loch Ness Monster exist? Do you approve of scientists investing their time and effort trying to locate other mystical animal similar to the monsters from fairy tales? Do you think cryptozoology is a serious subject that needs more support or do you find it to be a plain joke?

I suppose everyone has already seen this classic picture that claims to be of Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster. There have been countless debates and attempts to both debunk and confirm the authenticity of the picture. Nothing solid though. Do you think she exists?

I'd be very upset if a Yeti threw a rock at me.

You'd think with the billions of people on this planet, someone would actually be able to bring genuine evidence of one in. Or at least a decent picture. How many species on earth have not been documented yet? I can't imagine there's much left, especially for something as large as the Loch Ness or a Yeti.

I've always wondered - if Kraken and Leviathan encountered each other roaming the seas and got engaged in a fight, who would win?

Does cryptozoology cover the research of mermaids?

I totally believe in animals and creatures that are yet to be discovered. The Loch Ness Monster could just be a left over from the prehistoric era. Alligators survived, why couldn't another type of dinosaur?

By the way....I've seen this word used many times and mis-spelled. It's "wonder" not "wander". No offense to anyone, just a thing that irks me like an untied shoelace To wonder is to ponder something. To wander is to roam around...lol.

Maybe she was wandering around looking for that fight

It's not just you Angie....I don't want you to feel singled out...lol. It's everyone for some reason that I've seen so far. Like I said....I'm a freak when it comes to that shit. One day you'll find me in a padded room rocking back and forth spelling shit out

While I believe that there could be certain animal species that have not been discovered yet, I doubt anything of the site of a Loch Ness Monster or Yeti fits there.

At the same time I don't think people who say they saw a Yeti are lying. I'd say they just got confused and had a vision that seemed very real or mistook something else for a creature.

At the same time, cryptozoology could be as valid a science as explaining dreams. Whoever is into that and willing to believe let them believe. There are many paranormal events that take place around the globe, people should have their little safe heaven where their beliefs that this is real are not only accepted, but also shared with others likeminded individuals. If it doesn't harm others, let them have their cryptozoology. It's not religion; it doesn't kill for lust of money. So why not?

Cryptozoology - hat's a pretty funny name for this little bit of business. Oh, and BTW, Leviathan would annihilate Kraken.

One of the biggest arguments FOR cryptozoolgy is the rain forest. I don't know much about it, but there is a pretty high statistic as to how much of the worlds animal and bug population is in the rain forest, and one that is just as high, stating the estimated percentage of undiscovered creatures living in the rain forest, as apposed to other places.

Which is also another big reason so many people protest cutting down the rain forest in the means and as quickly as we do, claiming that we destroy animal populations to extinction before we even have the chance to discover them.

We have Nessy, they have giant gods that resemble bugs, and we need to know why damn it!

Paulie has got some valid points. Even though cryptozoology may seem mythology based, imagine what would happen if it was entirely debunked as science. The researchers would primarily focus on what's presented to them, what everybody knows about. Where as cryptozoologists based their research on the tribal stories that are passed from generation to generation, stories that regular scientist would only laugh off and file as ridiculous. Pursuing those tribal stories and trying to find if there could be anything behind them could lead to discovery of entirely unknown animals, a discovery that would never otherwise took place, because "normal" scientists would not pursue such research.

Oceans are deep, much deeper than humans can explore so it is possible there's whole unexplored world underneath. But Nessie was "seen" in a lake, a Loch Ness lake in Scotland. It's a big lake, but it's far form the vastness and depth of an ocean.

oh magic cards... funny sad but true story....

Back in high school there was always that group of nerdy guys...who would spend hours sitting there paying d&d, magic, and yugi-oh cards. Well I made a vow in high school that no matter how desparate I got I would never EVER NEVER!!! date one of those losers...

so the other day my bf comes home and he goes "Sweetie GUESS WHAT I BOUGHT!!!!" As he pulls out a brand new deck of magic cards.... I was like.... "well I guess I'll be packing my stuff and going back to my mom's... it's been swell... have a great life."

I know... you'd think i would have clued in with the video games and all the anime that he was a big geek.... yeah no. LOL I was like shocked when I found out just how big of a geek he really is. But luckily he's still pretty cool. Guys I knew in high school never wanted to go out and do anything... My bf is all about going out to the club or going out for beers after work and socializing.

I think Yeti was an actual being that existed and was seen. I imagine he was some form of lone ranger who didn't care for company and was very close with the nature. He lived far away in the mountains, oblivious to the wild word down here and everything to do with it. He knew the mountains from the back of his hand, knew every tree, every animal, every rock. He likely had a solid build and was very strong. To survive during winter, he was wearing grizzly fur from the beast he killed with his own hands. He may have made the shoes from bear's paws that he had wrapped around his feet. When he was spotted, he looked large and furry and disappeared quickly, because he knew the mountains and knew how to move from one spot to another quickly and inconspicuously. As the legend of his sighting was being passed from person to person, the myth of Yeti, the big foot.

I think North American version of a Yeti is Sasquatch. I'm not sure what the difference is, but he's a big foot too, having a giant footprint and is likely an interesting cryptozoology subject.

Yes, I've heard the name Sasquatch, but Yeti or BigFoot are definitely more common. Not sure where Tender got the information form that we call BogFoot a Sasquatch.

My uncle saw a Bigfoot in 1952 in Northern Calif. in a logging camp for Georgia Pacific Lumber (he was an engineer). He followed it with his car across a large space in the middle of camp with his headlamps, and several others watching. This was at least 6 years before Bigfoot hit the the American conscious in 1958 with the Bluff Creek print castings. My uncle was decapitated in 1960 by a snapped cable (sorry, no pics).

Don't forget the North American indians have been witnesses to Bigfoot/Sasquatch for 2000 years, have hundreds of names amongst hundreds of tribes for it, and have carved countless totems with its image.

It's pretty easy to form a negative opinion on the existence of Bigfoot from the comfort of your home and not met a witness, seen the vastness of the forests from the air, or looked into the accounts of thousands of years of Native history. They indeed exist.

I'm curious, what's the plural of the word BigFoot. Is it BigFeet or BigFoots?
