TMZ has learned that Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has died in NY.

He was found dead in his bed in one of his residences in Soho by his housekeeper at 3:35 PM ET today. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ they believe it was not a crime.

The 28-year-old actor has a two year old daughter with former fiance Michelle Williams. He plays The Joker in the upcoming Batman film, "The Dark Knight."

Story developing...

Damn, this is shitty news. So The Dark Knight is going down the shitter it seems. Everyone was impressed with how Heath Ledger pulled of the Joker in the trailer. Now it's all down the drain. Or did they have all footage shot already?

This is mind boggling. I can't wrap my brain around it at all. He seems like such a sweet heart and the LAST person you'd hear of over dosing. I wanted to see him acting in another movie and being the cutie he was in A Knights Tale. That movie has been SO over watched in my house, and more especially by my brother.

I don't want to believe it. It's so sad =(

Wow, cocaine is a bad drug. I've never seen Brokeback Mountain, but I hear he was terrific in it. He had a top career coming now with The Dark Knight. Damn, that's a big loss. RIP Heath Ledger

I figure it was suicide. They say he had a lot of pills around him. He was face down. It's so sad.

Totally sad! Wow....if he had a problem with prescription drugs, he hid it really well. I thought either Britney or Amy Winehouse would be the next to go. Never him.....

I just find it hard to believe it could have been suicide. He was about to make it real big. He was young and full of vitality. There must have been something else. Maybe he messed up with wrong people or maybe he knew too much or something. It just doesn't add up to for Heath Ledger to commit suicide.

He was only 28 years old, but maybe he had medical condition we don't know about. Maybe bad heart or something. And it could have been a combination of taking drugs and then sleeping pills (I'm just reading they've found over the counter sleeping pills scattered around him) and his heart didn't take it. We'll just have to wait and see. It's never good to jump to conclusion when someone famous dies, cause what if it turns out like in Chris Benoit's case

I have to admit, he's probably the only celebrity I ever had anything near to a crush on lol.

This sucks, I keep thinking about it and it really doesn't seem right. Like he should still be alive. obviously at 28 he SHOULD still be alive, but ya.

I think they're still investigating. Maybe obituary is in order to cast some more light into it. But it is possible he overdosed himself. Possibly a combination of cocaine and pills. Apparently he was found in the room face down with sleeping pills scattered all over the room. That's a shame. Obituary report may clarify many things.

They've performed autopsy on Heath Ledger but reports say it was "inconclusive". To precisely determine his cause of death, further tests will be conducted and according to medical examiner, it could take another 10 days.

Well I guess I should explain myself on why I believe it was suicide. He had an interview with this guy and they were talking about his ex-girl and his daughter. Basically Ledger was talking about how his ex-girl brought his daughter over to see him and when they left he felt like he could finally die happy because he could live his life forever through her. Then he said that on the other hand, he wouldn't want to die so he could spend forever with her.

The freakin' interviewer didn't find it odd at all, since he started joking about food shortly after. Would you not take that as a warning sign? Of course someone who's suicidal is going change the subject.

So that's why I think it's suicide. After hearing that, you really can't think anything else.

That's a definate possibility because when my sister attempted suicide, I asked her on several occasions if she was depressed and made comments on the way her attitude made a complete down spiral and she avoided it every single time..

Sounds like a warning sign to me too..

It's a shame because he was a good actor although i never did watch broke back mountain and many say that was a really good movie..

I didn't know much about Heath Ledger so I had to look stuff up. He hooked up with Michelle Williams while he was filming Brokeback Mountain. Michelle also co-starred in the same movie. They had a daughter named Matilda Rose together in 2005. Heath Leger and Michelle Williams separated last Summer, but Heath visited little Matilda often and the two could be seen in New York parks walking around and playing together.

This is one of the last pictures taken of Heath Ledger from Saturday night on the London set of "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus." (credit INFDaily)

Authorities also say Heath Ledger had opened bottles of ambien, xanax and valium by him when he was found lying head down in his apartment. BTW - his New York apartment cost $23,000 a month (damn!)

He once said he wouldn’t be scared dying young. Maybe he really overdosed himself on purpose

Production on what was supposed to be latest Heath Ledger film “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” has been completely shut down and all crew members fired. The principal photography took place in London but has moved to Vancouver this week where they were planning to start doing blue screen photography.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was directed by Terry Gillian and was about travelling show that came to modern London with a magical mirror that could transport those who looked into it into the world of imagination. Christopher Plummer was playing the lead role and Heath Ledger played a mysterious outsider. It is not yet clear what they will do with footage they already have, but the movie will not be finished (the funding for the movie was only provided because Heath Ledger was in it). Terry Gillian had one movie completely shut down before - The Man Who Killed Don Quote starring Johnny Depp was never finished because one of principal characters got seriously ill.

The Dark knight will be normally released as scheduled on July 18, this year – Warner Bros. confirmed. However they are reworking the marketing, because all plans to promote the movie were revolving around the Joker character (we have seen in the trailer how Joker was the main drag).

Yeah, rolled up $20 bill, but no traces of illegal drugs. However he had 6 different types of prescription drugs in his place, including earlier mentioned sleeping pills and anti anxiety drugs.

They are afraid to question Mary Kate, which is bullshit because id question her.. Seems the masseuss who found Heath called Mary Kate and spoke 3 times before they decided to call the ambulance and she then told the masseuss she was sending out some of her body guards..

They wonder why she did that when the body guards couldn't of done anything unless they knew CPR or a way to help him.. She should be questions and asked why 9 minutes passed before there was any attempt at calling 911.. Some of the shit don't add up to me..

Supposodely today they will release the toxicology reports...we'll see what happened finally.

It was so sad and so sudden a life cut short...

RIP Heath

CNN reporting Heath Ledger died of prescription overdose. It's a shame, he was so young

(CNN) -- Heath Ledger died as the result of an overdose of prescription medication, the New York City medical examiner's office said Tuesday.

"Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine," the office said in a short statement.

"We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications."

Ledger died January 22 at an apartment in Lower Manhattan. The Oscar-nominated Australian actor, best known for his role as a stoic, closeted cowboy in the 2005 film "Brokeback Mountain," was 28.

An autopsy done on the actor January 23 was inconclusive.

A housekeeper, identified as Teresa Solomon, arrived at the apartment about 12:30 p.m. on the day Ledger died, a police source with knowledge of the investigation said.

She saw Ledger lying on a bed face down with a sheet pulled up around his shoulders and heard him snoring, the source said.

Masseuse Diana Wolozin arrived at the apartment about 2:45 p.m. to give Ledger a massage, according to the police source. About 15 minutes later, when he had not come out of the bedroom and the door remained closed, she went in, saw him lying in bed and set up a massage table.

She shook Ledger, but he did not respond, so she used his cell phone to call actress Mary-Kate Olsen, a friend of Ledger's, in California, the source said.

Wolozin told Olsen that Ledger was unconscious, according to the police source.

Olsen reportedly told her that she would call private security people in New York.

At 3:26 p.m., Wolozin called 911 and told authorities Ledger was not breathing. While on the phone with dispatchers, Wolozin tried to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Ledger, but he was unresponsive.

Emergency personnel arrived seven minutes later, according to the police source, at about the same time as a private security person summoned by Olsen.

The medical technicians performed CPR on Ledger and used a cardiac defibrillator, but their efforts were in vain and he was pronounced dead at 3:36 p.m. By then, two other private security people summoned by Olsen had arrived as well as police.

Ledger's family called his death "very tragic, untimely and accidental." Relatives returned home Tuesday to Perth, Australia, where a private funeral ceremony reportedly will be held, according to The Associated Press. The timing of the funeral is unclear, the AP said.

His former fiancée, actress Michelle Williams, has asked the public to respect the need for her, the couple's 2-year-old daughter, Matilda, and others "to grieve privately."

"My heart is broken," Williams said in a statement issued last week via her publicist. "I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father. All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day. His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time, and we know that he is with us still. She will be brought up in the best memories of him."

Condolences poured in from Ledger's friends and co-stars.

"He was a wonderful guy, he was a wonderful actor, he had a wonderful future ahead of him, and I liked him," said actor Eric Roberts, who worked with Ledger in "The Dark Knight," the latest installment in the "Batman" series set to open in July.

Colleagues on the Terry Gilliam's film "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," which Ledger had been shooting in England, said the actor apparently had been suffering from a respiratory ailment in the days before he died.

Christopher Plummer told Entertainment Weekly that Ledger had a "terrible, lingering bug in London, and he couldn't sleep at all. We all -- I thought he'd probably got walking pneumonia."

Ledger's first American film was the teen comedy "10 Things I Hate About You" in 1999. He passed up several scripts before taking a role in the Revolutionary War drama "The Patriot" in 2000 and "A Knight's Tale" in 2001. He also played a supporting role in "Monster's Ball."

But Ledger was perhaps best known for his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in "Brokeback Mountain," Ang Lee's film about two cowboys who had a secret romantic relationship. The role earned Ledger a best actor Oscar nomination.

heath ledger must have expected he could die. This is shit loads of pills and anyone who takes a combo of tranquilizers, anti-depressants and painkillers all at once is pretty much realizing he could die. Maybe he wanted to kill himself

Yeah, taking so many different pills at once doesn't sound much like an "accidental overdose". That's what Anna Nicole Smith died from. This type of "accidental overdose".

I thought pharmacists had their little computer systems where they can see which person picked up how many of which medications. Unless he got some of his meds under the table, this shouldn't be possible.

As far as I read, he had some of them prescribed in the states and others in Europe. Since he didn't go to the same pharmacists every time for his prescriptions, they couldn't track which ones he was taking and how they would interact.

I don't think it was on purpose. He had complained about not being able to sleep so I think he treated the sleeping pills almost like aspirin. If the recommended dosage of 2 doesn't work, pop another and maybe even two and it should work then. Sleeping pills are not aspirin though......big difference.
