Not much is known about Daryl Katz, he's got to be one of most low profile billionaires in the world. Daryl Katz obviously values his privacy and protects his family from being invaded by news hungry media. Many of us, the citizens of Edmonton may not have even heard of him till today. One of the wealthiest Edmontonians, Daryl Katz became new owner of Edmonton Oilers after his $200 million bid.

Picture of Daryl Katz from 2003 by Bruce Edwards for Edmonton Journal

Who is Daryl Katz?
46 years old billionaire Daryl Katz is the owner of drug store chains including Rexall (that's why Edmonton's Hockey Arena is Named Rexall Place), Pharma Plus, Medicine Shoppe, and more.

Rexall Place in Edmonton

I think he is the owner of the most awesome massive house in Edmonton, the one you can see form the trails along side North Saskatchewan River. It's the mansion on the hill looking like a castle overlooking whole of Edmonton while being totally secluded and private. When I first saw it I was like - whoa, who owns this incredible estate? I think I know who. Daryl Katz, new owner of Edmonton Oilers.

He's definitely not the Donald Trump type of billionaire, who constantly wants to be in the spotlight. Daryl Katz likes to keep the affairs surrounding him and his family quite and he's been doing damn good job at it. Now that's he's the owner of Edmonton Oilers he may need to step out a little more and be seen and heard actually. We'll see how that all goes from here.

Daryl Katz is an Edmontonian, he lives in Edmonton, wants to stay in Edmonton and he's proud of being part of this city. Wayne Gretzky also supports him and thinks Daryl Katz will be a great owner of Edmonton Oilers. Mark Messier had positive things say about him a month ago. Are Edmontonians ready for him though?

I think the only reason why some Oiler fans feel uncertain about Daryl Katz becoming new owner is because he keeps it so low profile so very little is known about him. People don't know who exactly he is and what exactly he stands for. I think he will have to come out of the shell and address these questions publically soon. I've heard of a phone interview he promised to give - but that's all. A measly phone interview. But good for him. He doesn't desire to be another Britney Spears struggling to make it on the front page of every publication you can think of.

Daryl Katz also made a promise to invest additional $100 million into the revitalization of downtown arena.

I am. I was getting tired of the EIG starting to let things slip in the last few years. He has promised money towards a new rink, which is good for the city, and the city is stupid to not use money to build one (that is a rant for a different day though).

He seems to genuinely care about the team and the city. He stepped up to make sure they had a place to play when Skyreach bailed. He is promising to spend to the cap every year. He is promising to do whatever he can to get marquee players here. Most importantly of all, he wants the Oilers to regain their glory, maybe not win every year, but to go back to being a team that other teams don't want to play.

That's pretty much the way I see it. His bid sounds like the best thing that could have happened to the Oilers. The only negative thus far is apparent obscurity of his persona, but he likes Edmonton, he lives here and appears to want to do his best to help it grow. And regain former Oilers glory. That's about the type of enthusiasm Edmonton Oilers really need. Daryl Katz is the best thing that could happen to the Oilers.

I like the obscurity thing personally. We don't need another Pocklington.

I really hope the city ponies up tax money for the rink. I know people will whine about it, but I really don't care. We used tax money for the Windspear center, the Citadel, City Library, and loads of other buildings that the artsy community wanted all spruced up, well after 30 years it is time to pony up some of that and build a new rink. They all fail to see just what a new rink the downtown will mean. Plus out of all those buildings I mentioned, which of them make more money for the city than the rink?

Edmonton are retards for building a new areana
and even worse wanting it down town
every team, band, play etc that has to come to edmonton odds are will be coming from Highway 2 so great Idea make them drive downtown edmonton on the shitty roads accross the stupidly old bridge thats probably the most slippery place in edmonton come winter
if they were smart the new rink would be on the sound side where edmonton is growing like wild fire and their is tons of room
but instead no stick it in crowded down town edmonton where you will probably have to park blocks away and than walk to the areana
I live in Leduc (for those of you who dont know thats about 15 minutes south of edmonton)
and if I leave work at 5 pm I just make it to the areana for a 7pm puck drop with all the traffic and thats understandable where the areana is right now is pretty much the perfect loaction as its central to just about everything

plus the oilers have a beautiful areana right now their is NO reason to build a new one
and even less of a reason to build one for a team thats i sin rebuild mode and probably wont be a cup runner for atleast 3-5 more years

but now go ahead all of you who know im a flames fans get your little jabs in about calgary

There is plenty of reasons to build downtown over the southside.

1. Revitalize downtown. It would bring more business to the downtown core and give people a reason to hang out there. This would mean the stores there would be busier making more money. It would also help get rid of the slum areas east of 97th.

2. Traffic already sucks bad enough onn the south end, why make it a ton worse? With the transit expansions it will be easier to get to downtown than it is now, and it is very easy now. There is also a ton more parking downtown.

3. The current building is 30 years old, it is the oldest and smallest in the NHL. It is no where near "beautiful", it is falling apart.

4. The current arena is not central to anything, it is in a horrible part of town, and there is no parking.

Are you serious? They have sold out 100 games in a row. And it is not a waste of money for a team with one of the biggest revenues in the league. Unlike Flames fans Oilers fans are fans for life.

The roof is starting to leak, the pipes for cooling the ice are cracking, the seats suck, the heaters for the stands are unreliable.

Speaking of Edmonton Oilers (not really following on ice hockey happenings) - how are they doing this season anyway? Are they gonna make it to play offs? Is there a good chance or a poor chance for play offs? Or are they just outsiders this season?

PS - you can tell I'm not following local sport scene cause I haven't even heard of any deal going on with selling Edmonton Oilers shares. Never heard the name Daryl Katz either. But sounds like he lives in a fun house. Must be awesome being a billionaire

oh yes the oilers fans are so much better than flames fans

dedication

Oilers fans destroy their own city because most of them didnt know the team was even around last time they made play offs and didnt know what to do when they saw it with their own eyes

I'm not an Oilers fan (I'm nobody's fan... except from maybe Daryl Katz cause I'd love to have his money) but nobody can touch Edmonton Oilers fans hands down. Proof:

and same event from the cell phone camera of one of the fans in audience (except that the guy with a camera can't sing, but get past that part and you get the picture)

So you are going to base how oiler fans are by the few jackasses will use anything for an excuse to act like morons? Awesome... Because none of that happened when Calgary was in the finals... Speaking of which, since you posted the pic from Calgary int he finals, how many of those "loyal" Calgary fans showed up the next season? From the games I saw, not very many. Calgary doesn't deserve the talent they have.

I'm definitely not an oilers fan but this seems like a positive for their fans and the city. I always hated the corporate nature of the leafs and to see a local owner take majority ownership of a hometown team is a positive.

Harley Hotchkiss is generally the one that most people would associate with Calgary Flames ownership.
